Assignment 6

I investigated several digital storytelling site. I created and saved a story in Kerpoof, but the site would not allow me to e-mail my creation to this site.
Three Ways I could use Kerpoof:
1.I can see my 2nd graders enjoying Kerpoof and It would be a good tool to encourage 2nd graders to create text for their characters.
2.Kerpoof scenes would also be a great way to encourage creative writing. After my students create and print their scene, they could use their scene as a cover for a story that they will compose.
3. Students could use their creations to make such thinks as birthday cards and thank you notes for their classmates.
My kids would have an easy time adding and resizing objects. The hardest task might be adding the song. (I was not able to achieve this step).

Assignment 10

The end of the journey is really a beginning. This course has opened the door to the limitless possibilities that exist in incorporating technology in the classroom. I experienced first hand the importance of previewing sites before sharing with others and how critical it is to monitor your students and maintain your privacy. I also discovered how important it is to keep track of all your usernames, passwords, screennames and email accounts and which is attached to what. Taking a course online was a valuable experience. In the future our students will be taking courses online and this course gave me insight into the experience.

Assignment 9

Slide share can be a useful tool to post your own existing materials or using the creation of other. However, you must check all the info on existing slide show, since not all facts are accurate.

Glogster

Assignment 8 Glogster

I explored the Glogster site and created a Glog. While I thought the website has potential for classroom projects I also had some critical reservations. I created an "All About Me" poster. I was able to add sound and video and found the site easy to navigate. My concern is when I went to add pictures and was able to search for shared pictures, even searching the word "piano" brought up images that were not appropriate for school aged viewers. My Glog can be viewed by clicking the link below.

Lesson 7, Assignment 2

1 point for contributing

I did post a comment on this site. I have not figured out how to view my comment.

Lesson 7, Assignment 1

1 point for exploring.

I explored Mixbook, Tikatos, Wallwisher, and the Flash card site. I can see that the Mixbook is something that I can use, expecially with our biography unit. The Flash card site is also good for second grade.

Lesson 1, Question 4

Lesson 1, Question 4
Comments on Rethinking Education in the New Digital Landscape by Ian Jukes.

Considering that SAT scores still mainly determine college acceptance, change may need to come from the top down.
Am I assessing 21st century skills? What has worked for me? What can I change to achieve long term learning and focus on higher level thinking skills?
I am trying. I was granted a new room arrangement on my wish list this year. The classroom will have large areas for setting up centers for investigation. The idea is to have students making discoveries by interacting with the materials at the centers and reporting on what they have discovered. Their reports will be my means of assessing what they have learned. I am hoping that the learning will be more their responsibility instead of teacher dictated or lecture type delivery of lessons.

Lesson 1 Question 3

Assignment 1, Question 3

3. Name some 21st century skills. Which skills do you think are important?

Answer: As a teacher of 2nd graders, I know that the 3R's (Reading, Writing, and arithmetic) remain the most important skills. However, to prepare my students for the 21st century, my approach to teaching these skills will change. I should examine my approach to delivering the 2nd grade curriculum to promote and support such 21st century skills as self-direction, adaptability, problelm solving, inventive thinking, risk taking, global awareness, collaboration skills, digital proficiency, and higher order thinking skills. Children will also need to understand how to apply skills to real world applications.

Lesson 1

Assignment 1

1. How would you define Web2.0?

I would define Web 2.0 as an interactive way to sharing and collaborating information.
Web 2.0 sites allow users to do more than just retrieve information.
Web 2.0 offers a rich interactive framework for learning.

Reading
I've read the entire first section and I'm anxious to change the manner in which I conduct my classroom. The quote in the article World Without Walls really has me thinking. The Quote that caught my attention is " Our ability to learn whatever we want, whenever we want, from whomever we want is rendering the linear, age-grouped, teacher-guided curriculum less and less relevant." Where do I begin?

Documented Exploration

I visited "We tell Stories--Fairy Tales" today and I think this site will be useful for 2nd graders for these reasons:

1. The reading level appears to be appropriate for 2nd graders.

2. This site provides an introduction to creating stories. It is difficult for many 2nd graders to create a story without a framework. This site provides the framework and the students will have fun and experience decision making while creating their individual stories.

3. Reading stories aloud will provide opportunity for oral reading experience.

4. The created stories can be used in literature circles.

5. Students can compare stories and ending.
